What We Offer

Yoga

Yoga is a thousand-year-old practice originating in India, passed down through generations of teachers. This ancient system includes physical, mental and spiritual practises.

The word Yoga is derived from a Sanskrit root meaning to bind, attach, join or yoke. Which we can translate to, the union/yoking of the self (body, breath, and spirit) with the universal consciousness.

Yoga in the West has become modernised, with an emphasize on the physical postures (asanas). On the contrary, yoga is a deeply transformative practice, in which one aims to achieve enlightenment and harmony by utilising the 8 stages or limbs: The Yamas, and Niyamas (how we are in the world and to ourselves), Asana (postures), Pranayama (rhythmic breath) and Pratyahara (withdrawal of the senses), Dharana (concentration), Dhyana (meditation) and Samadhi (enlightenment).

There are so many physical and mental benefits of yoga, and we offer many different types of yoga practice.

Whether you are here just for the physical benefits of yoga, or ready to dive a little deeper into self-awareness, and self-discovery, we can’t wait to meet you on the mat.

Mat Pilates

Pilates was created by a physical trainer called Joseph Pilates (1883 – 1967), who as a young boy, suffered from asthma and other ailments. As he grew, he turned to physical exercise to combat these ailments and became fascinated with the body. This led him to dedicating many years to studying the human body, and the optimal balance between mind, body, and spirit.

He first worked with injured soldiers following the First World War; working on rehabilitation and bringing movement and strength back to bed ridden patients.

In the 1920’s he moved to New York City and opened a studio, his first clienteles being dancers. Joseph disagreed with all conventional exercise at the time, and focused on less weight, and training at a slower, controlled pace. He believed in breath work, flow, control and precision, concentration and centring, allowing the body to remain limber and strong. This created the basis for his principles: Breathe, Whole-body health, and Whole-body commitment.

In our Pilates classes, we honour Joseph’s original principles and classical foundations, adding a modern twist and having some fun along the way.

If you are looking at trying a class that works from the core out, using focus and control to regain strength and balance in the body, then try one of our Pilates classes!

Class Types - Yoga

Slow Flow

With purpose and mindfulness, this dynamic practice flows from pose to pose (a little slower than our Vinyasa Classes). We still focus on our ‘yang’ tissues (muscles), moving breath and energy, but hold poses a little longer. In these classes we cover a range of sun salutations, vinyasas and have some fun, playing with certain postures or arm balances towards the end. If you are looking to flow mindfully and breathe, this is the class for you.

Vinyasa

Faster moving, these dynamic yoga classes will have you flowing from pose to pose, focusing on fluidity and your ‘yang’ tissues (muscles), moving your breath and your energy. In these classes we cover a range of sun salutations, vinyasas and have some fun, playing with certain postures or arm balances towards the end. If you are looking to move a little faster, or a challenge, this is the class for you.

Vin Yin

These classes offer a balance of movement and stillness. Half of the class we will move and breath and flush out stagnant energy, then the other half we will move slowly, hold poses longer and enjoy a beautiful release. These classes balance the yin and our yang energy in our bodies.

Yin

Here we find stillness, turning inwards, moving slowly between shapes, and surrendering into poses for 3 to 5 minutes at a time. Yin refers to in-ward. We focus on our deeper soft tissues, our ‘yin’ tissues – ligaments, joints, deep fascial networks and bones, and aim to release tension.

We focus on breath and unblocking stagnant energy through subtle energy channels known as Meridians in Chinese medicine.
